Your Home of 2030 is affordable and green

The home of the future will be affordable, green and promote a healthy lifestyle according to Oxfordshire’s residents.

At a special workshop in Oxford last week run by Design Council and supported by the Oxfordshire Growth Board, people from across the county’s communities came together to think innovatively about the homes that they, their friends and their family might want and need in the future

The event on December 2 was one of a series of creative and interactive workshops being held across the UK as part of the recently launched Home of 2030 initiative.

Home of 2030 aims to develop practical and scalable ideas for future homes which are suitable for all ages and are environmentally sustainable over their entire lifespan. It is run by a consortium led by BRE, with Design Council and the charity MOBIE as key partners.

During the workshop at Oxford Town Hall, participants worked in teams, discussing a range of issues – including raising the quality of housing design, providing more affordable housing, and developing homes that better adapt to people’s changing needs – before developing and pitching their shared vision of the Home of 2030.

Elli Thomas, Lead Programme Manager at Design Council, said: “Design Council believes that the best homes and neighbourhoods are developed by communities, not just for them.

“Our workshops are about giving local people from all walks of life the chance to come together, share new ideas and think innovatively about the homes of the future.

“We were delighted by the energy and enthusiasm of all our participants in Oxford, and we look forward to reviewing their feedback as we continue our work to help create places that work for everyone.”

Workshop attendee, Ingrid Mankelow, said: “The workshop enabled collaborative thinking and I learned from others through the exercises. I think that there are several issues for our future homes that need to be addressed, particularly that they will have to meet different needs of different people.”
